2014-11-28 · Disciplines differ in their authorship and citation practices, thus discipline-specific h-index norms are desirable. Thus the goal of this study was to examine the relationship between the h-index and academic rank in the field of medical education, and the differences in the h-index between MD’s and PhD’s in this field.
2017-10-01 · The h-index has been extended to entire research institutions (e.g., Molinari and Molinari ) and has been shown to be an effective means of ranking them. It has also been modified in a number of ways : g-index , e-index , Contemporary h-index , Age-weighed citation rate , Multi-authored h-index, Individual h-index , and others.
The index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers and the number of citations The h -index is an index that attempts to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. In Scopus, the h -index is not a static value; it is calculated live on a set of results each time you look it up. The calculation was suggested by Hirsch and it can be summed up as: The h-index is a measure of the impact of a researcher (or a group of researchers). The h value means, that the author, group or the institution has published at least h papers, which gained at least h citations each. No offence.

The h-index ignores the number of citations to each individual article beyond what is needed to achieve a certain h-index. Hence an academic with an h-index of 5 could theoretically have a total of 25 citations (5 for each paper), but could also have more than a 1000 citations (4 papers with 250 citations each and one paper with 5 citations). The h-index is an index that attempts to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar.
Step 3: Rank the papers by the number of times they have been cited.

A scientist’s h-index is the highest number of papers they have published which have each amassed at least that number of citations: George Whitesides, with an h of 169, has published 169 papers which have each received at least 169 citations, for example. The h index can especially work to your advantage if you have published many papers. I understand that it is troublesome and time consuming to calculate your h index because it requires you to maintain a record of all your published papers and the citations they have received through timely searches on multiple databases.
How to interpret h-index and i10-index? Of course people self select to get on here but it gives you a good sense of how many typical cites the big names get.
The h index corrects for the disproportionate weight of highly cited publications or publications that have not yet been cited. The h-index was devised by physicist Jorge Hirsch in 2005 to measure research impact. A scientist’s h-index is the highest number of papers they have published which have each amassed at least that number of citations: George Whitesides, with an h of 169, has published 169 papers which have each received at least 169 citations, for example. The h-index does not distinguish the relative contributions of authors in multi-author articles. You raise a good point about citation culture changing, but 10 citations/paper is still quite low in my opinion considering that 50 years of papers were published from 1905-1955, and I'm sure many of them cited relativity, the photo-electric effect, and brownian motion, leaving very little room for a high h-index, even for his time! – user1271772 Jul 11 '20 at 23:37 A high H‐index means the author has a relatively high number of highly cited papers.
